Learn to Row

Every passion beings with a single stroke.

The Leander Learn to Row (LTR) program was created for anyone with no previous rowing experience! With Leander LTR you will be introduced to the basics of rowing in a safe and friendly environment. Come on your own or sign up with a friend! For the season we will be offering the following sessions:

Learn-To-Row: Our introductory one week program for anyone interested in rowing (Ages 12+)
Learn-To-Row One-on-One: Private lessons geared towards individuals, teams, or corporations
Learn-To-Row Safety: Safety Policies and requirements for all rowers

Learn to Row

Leander LTR is a 1 week course including 15 hours of professional instruction over 5 days. This course will teach the basics of the rowing stroke, boat and water safety, and let you discover the love of rowing on Hamilton’s beautiful west harbour.

The week’s layout:

Day 1: First day will be conducted on land to learn about water safety, rowing equipment (boat and oars), and basic technique. The first lesson will also cover safely carrying and stepping into and out of a rowing shell.

Day 2-4: Three on-water sessions will run, weather permitting. In case of poor weather conditions, we will train on land.

Day 5: The week is concluded with a skills competition, potluck, and graduation ceremony on Friday. Each graduate will be presented with a certificate for their successful completion of the Leander LTR course.

Go Further…

Many LTR grads continue into the Leander Recreational (Rec) program to further develop their newly acquired skills. After Rec, Leander’s Competitive Club and Masters teams are also realistically in reach for those wishing a greater challenge and have both the ability and time to commit.

Learn to Row One on One

LTR One on One offers a more private setting for your individual learning, group adventure, or corporate team building. Sessions will be subject to time availability of coaches and equipment. Please contact us for prices and to arrange for your One on One sessions!

Ability Requirements
All participants should be able to swim, waist belt Personal Floatation Devices (PFDs) must be worn by anyone not able to swim and will be available for others who desire them to wear them. Depending on the weather you may also need a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen or longer pants/tights, a sweatshirt or long sleeve athletic top, or rain jacket and an extra set of clothes in the case of rain. There are change rooms, showers, and a number small lockers will be provided for LTR to safely store any valuables while on the water.

Weather Conditions
If there is poor weather the introductory rowers will participate in on-land training that may include the rowing machines, rowing tank, weights, and circuits. Sessions will run no matter the weather!

Leander is situated at the foot of Bay St. North in Pier 4 park along the waterfront trail.
