Masters’ rowers from Leander Boat Club competed at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta on Sunday August 1st. All crews gave strong performances through a tough head wind and rough water conditions.

Results summary follows. The next challenge for the Masters’ crews will be the World Masters’ Regatta to be held in St. Catharines September 2 - 5.

Claude Saunders was one of 12 inducted into the new Hamilton Sports Hall of Fame.  He devoted his life to the advancement of rowing.

He completed for Leander Boat Club from 1932 – 1948 and during that time completed in two Olympic Games.  He is the first Canadian to receive the FISA referee licence and the first Canadian to referee in the sport of rowing at the 1964 and 1968 Olympics.

He served as chairman of the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta from 1958 – 1998. He is a member of Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame and has received the Order of Canada.  He is one of the founders of the Canadian Secondary School Rowing Association and served as the chairman for over 30 years.

Claude was president of Leander Boat Club for 34 years and served on the board of trustees until his passing in 2007. Leander Boat Club is indebted to him for his dedication to the sport of rowing.

Mel LaForme competed in the World Erg Championships in Boston over the February13 - 14th weekend. He placed second in a time of 6:28 over 2000 metres 3 seconds behind first. Congratulations Mel!!
