Ten Years in a Row for Heart
2001 – 2010
2010 marks the tenth season of Row for Heart at Leander. Row for Heart is a joint program shared by The Heart and Stroke Foundation and Leander Boat Club. Since its earliest days, this program has introduced hundreds of citizens of the greater Hamilton area to rowing. It has steadily been our most successful community based program giving a unique access to the waterfront to people who might not choose competitive rowing as an activity. What really makes this effort stand out however is that participants in the program have raised over $250,000 for Heart and Stroke research!
Our program begins in the first week of June. Crews are scheduled to train one night per week. After eight weeks of training, all of the crews participate in our annual Row for Heart Regatta held on the last Saturday in July.
Crews are formed many ways. Some will be corporate groups, neighborhood groups, rowing parents and community crews where people get to know each other in a boat. Some participants have continued with this program since its earliest days while some have moved on to other club programs.
Our membership at Leander is pleased to share our love for rowing with anyone who wants to participate. Crews are coached by volunteers who row in our competitive programs and their generosity and attention to the athletes assure that all Row for Heart Crews are ready on race day.
